Tooth and Tail, a real-time strategy video game developed and published by the indie team at Pocketwatch Games, known for their work on Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine, made its debut in September 2017 on Windows, MacOS, Linux, and PlayStation 4.

Set in a world of anthropomorphic animals grappling with severe food shortages, the game unfolds within a backdrop of political upheaval, as various factions clash over differing ideologies on food acquisition. Gameplay options encompass both single-player and multiplayer modes, accommodating gamepads as well as keyboard and mouse configurations. Players initiate each match by selecting six units from a pool of twenty. The ultimate objective is to dismantle the enemy's resource base through strategic construction of structures and unit creation. Instead of the conventional top-down view, each player commands a commander character.



Tooth and Tail's development commenced during the final stages of Monaco's development. Several prototypes of real-time strategy (RTS) games were explored before the game, originally named Armada, was officially unveiled in March 2014. The core vision was to create an RTS experience devoid of micromanagement and the need for high-speed actions per minute. From the outset, the game was designed to be compatible with both gamepads and keyboard-and-mouse setups. In August 2014, the game underwent a title change to Lead to Fire, only to be renamed Tooth and Tail in August 2015, referencing the tooth-to-tail ratio. Despite initial plans to launch on Steam's Early Access platform, this never came to fruition.

Gameplay:


The game garnered positive reviews and secured two awards in 2016: "Best Character Design" at Intel Level Up and a tie with Giant Cop for "Guest's Pick" at Media Indie Exchange. While the multiplayer modes received acclaim, the single-player mode faced criticism for difficulty spikes that hindered enjoyment. Numerous comparisons were drawn to other works, particularly the Redwall novel series and George Orwell's Animal Farm novella.

Tooth and Tail unfolds in a society during the 19th century, where anthropomorphic animals grapple with chronic food shortages. In response, some animals turn to cannibalism to survive. The Civilized, led by Archimedes, institute a lottery system to determine who gets eaten, sparking widespread controversy. The Commonfolk, dissatisfied with both being eaten and the high cost of food, revolt. Meanwhile, Bellafide's wealthy merchant son, selected for consumption, rebels to establish a merit-based food-selection system. Despite their differing ideals, Hopper of the Commonfolk joins forces with Bellafide.

As the revolution ensues, the Civilized fight to maintain their power and status quo. Amidst the chaos, Quartermaster, head of the late Tsarina's K.S.R secret police, seizes control of military elements to support Archimedes and the Civilized temporarily.

Towards the game's conclusion, the pigs, on the brink of extinction due to the war, reveal they manipulated the other three armies with false information, luring them into a deadly confrontation. As the armies engage in destructive combat, the pigs revolt, seeking revenge for their enslavement and consumption. A horde of pigs ambushes the remaining army, leaving the fate of the commanders and the other meat-eating animals uncertain.

Tooth and Tail, designed for gamepad and keyboard-and-mouse setups, features both single-player and multiplayer modes. In single-player, players progress through a progressively challenging story by completing levels with varying objectives, including optional "heroic" tasks. Multiplayer mode offers ranked or unranked online matchmaking and local split-screen play for up to four players, who can either form teams of two or compete individually.

Before each match, players choose a commander from four factions and draft six units from a pool of twenty. These units are divided into fifteen offensive units of varying strength and cost and five defensive units. Unit choices are final, and additional units cannot be unlocked during the match. Players control a commander and must construct structures, such as farms, near gristmills to gather essential resources. Most structures can only be built near gristmills, preventing players from constructing near enemy territory during scouting or espionage. Units are produced at warrens, provided players have sufficient food resources. Depending on the unit's tier, some are more costly than others. Since food is limited, players must plan their attacks carefully. Campfires serve as a combination of gristmills and farms, allowing construction of structures nearby while generating food. Victory entails destroying the enemy's gristmills and campfires, with procedurally generated maps offering unique advantages and disadvantages in each match.
